Teddy Pendergrass – Duets Title Coming August 21

00

As many of you know (because I keep reminding you), the Teddy Pendergrass Duets title will be released by our partners at Cleopatra on August 21.  It’s been getting a ton of great publicity thanks to Cleopatra’s marketing arm and is even featured on the iTunes R&B page in the pre-order section.

The idea for the original Pendergrass masters came about in the late 1990s when my good friend and producer, Mickey Yannich, knew we were looking for artists to record.  He had connections to a lot of the Philly guys, The Trammps, Eddie Holman, Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes….and Teddy Pendergrass.  Teddy had been in this horrible accident and was paralyzed from neck down, but Mickey approached him anyway to tell him about what we had in mind.

Amazingly, Teddy was up for it.  So Mickey and his yet-to-be-wife Chrissy went to Teddy’s home/studio outside of Philadelphia to do the recordings.  It was a rough process, because Teddy could only sing a couple of songs a day given his condition but Mickey was patient and eventually nailed the vocals.  Then he added great players on the backing tracks and voila!  The first Pendergrass masters recorded after the accident belong to us.  Teddy went back to performing after recording for us, appearing on TV shows, as a guest at various concerts, etc.  But no one can ever take away the fact that his first sessions after his accident were done for us and those sessions would’ve never taken place if not for Mickey Yannich.

Now we’ve deconstructed the masters and reconstructed them again.  Brian Perera at Cleopatra came up with the idea of the Duets album and we enlisted Mickey’s help again to nail down some of the guest vocalists.  He used his connections to score Maxi Priest, The Stylistics, The O’Jays and others. And Brian filled in the blanks with Angie Stone, Eric Gales, Shuggie Otis, Noora Noor and more.

The lead track is a revisiting of one of Teddy’s most famous songs, Love TKO.  Angie Stone hits it dead on, not singing over Teddy’s voice but complementing it.  And when you hear it, you can’t believe they aren’t in the same room.

Pre-order it now on Amazon and iTunes, you won’t regret it.  Duets: Love & Soul, Teddy Pendergrass.  Coming out from Cleopatra Records, August 21.
